Manchester United face a really tough trip to an on-song Everton over the weekend and, in his news conference, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez reserved special praise for a United stalwart.
With all the hype surrounding Manchester United’s new boy and Premier League Player of The Month Anthony Martial, many expected Martinez to focus on the flying Frenchman.
But the Spaniard took the time to big up an Everton old boy. The Daily Mail quotes him as saying:
‘What Wayne has given to England is incredible, he is always there, he is always fit; he is always ready to compete. I don’t think he gets appreciated by the public in general. I think the appreciation from the outside is a lot kinder than it is here. I don’t know why. That’s the reality.’
He thinks that some of the criticism of Manchester United’s 235 goal man is unfair:
‘I don’t understand the criticism,’ said Martinez. ‘If you look at his numbers, his contributions and his availability, you always have players that live off this potential and the signs they had but they are not capable of giving you a proper six, seven years of service.
We have to agree. Rooney is clearly having a dip in form right now and some think that, with the player touching 30, that it’s the beginning of a terminal demise.
But those theories possibly overlook the fact that Rooney has regularly been a slow starter in The Premier League.
He has always taken time to find his rhythm and that can’t have been helped, this season, by the fact that he has so many new players around him. Memphis and Martial are entirely new attacking partners and in midfield he is regularly playing with new boys Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
These facts must surely play a part in the form of the Manchester United legend.
We are backing him to come out of the other end of the tunnel once more and play a massive part for Manchester United in the No.10 position this season.
