Liverpool fans will have been alerted today to reports that the club have sound out Carlo Ancelotti as a possible successor to Brendan Rodgers. The Daily Mail reports:
Liverpool make contact with Carlo Ancelotti as pressure mounts on Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers himself will also be well aware of the speculation after another summer of huge investment and poor dividends so far.
Liverpool currently sit 13th in the league on 8 points after 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats in the league so far. It is still early days in the season but Liverpool are already 7 points off the pace in the league and few expect to them to make a title challenge now.
So this game could be crucial for the immediate future of Rodgers. Anything other than a commanding win will arguably leave him closer to the exit door.
But it could also be the start of something special. The fat lady hasn’t yet sung and if Liverpool can go on a good run, in a heavily results-based industry, then he may yet save himself from the chop.
We would ask whether there has been any real progress made during his tenure though? After over 3 years at the club Liverpool don’t look noticeably better than when he took the reins.
