With the transfer ban still hanging over Barcelona the last thing they will want to do is lose valuable players from their squad.
Pedro looks alarmingly close to leaving the club right now in search of regular action in a first team.
Barcelona are in a tricky situation with this one because if they were to promise Pedro a start every week they would be lieing.
But there is much more positive news on the future of the excellent Javier Mascherano.
He has confirmed that there has been interest from other clubs, but that he is simply not interested.
“I know that there has been something about another interested team, but my commitment to Barca is undoubted. It is always the same and it will be like so until the last day that I am here,”
At 31 Mascherano has been instrumental in Barcelona’s success since he joined the club in 2010.
It’s not just his quality on the ball and general dynamism but his ability to play so well in different positions that has really helped the Catalan club.
At 5ft 8.5in he wouldn’t be an obvious choice for centre back, but he has filled in there magnificently and he has made the position his own over the last year or so.
He looks as fit as ever and has at least a couple of top years left in the tank.
So it’s great to hear that he wants to continue with Barcelona.
Let’s see some of his finest moments for the club.
Barcelona fans: is he still a guaranteed starter this season?
