Great potential

Watching The Champions League final we were reminded of how rare it is to see a player running with the ball these days.

In Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. Barcelona are lucky enough to have two – and it causes absolute panic amongst the opposition. It’s easier to plan for players who pass instead of dribble because everyone has a man to mark. But when an opponent is prepared to run at you with the ball it asks new questions and pulls players out of position.

England’s version of Neymar is surely Raheem Sterling. Manchester United have been linked with a star who is off the pace in terms of form. But, at his best, he can challenge the likes of Neymar for skill and influence on a game. Sterling’s finishing can still improve. But he commits opposition players in such a dangerous way that he is the big hope for the next England’s generation.

But can Manchester United sign him? They could certainly use his talents as they have lacked pace out wide over the last few years.

And his club seems to be losing the battle for his services. But you do feel that their last action in the process will be to prevent him going to Manchester United – their fiercest rivals.

With other bids likely to come in, from teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid, there will be no lack of suitors for the lad, even at that level of transfer fee.

So a move to Manchester United looks unlikely unless the player specifically asks for a transfer to Old Trafford. To that end, reports last week were encouraging as The Guardian reported:

Raheem Sterling considering Manchester United move

• Sterling keen to work under Louis van Gaal at United

In summary Manchester United fans shouldn’t hold their breath but there is a glimmer of potential with this move.
