Manchester United: Next great anchor man already signed?

Surprise

When Marouane Fellaini first joined Manchester United he clumsier than an elephant on ice skates. After spending years at Everton as a major attacking threat David Moyes chose to play Fellaini as a defensive midfielder at United and it backfired horribly.

Fellaini lost confidence and spent much of the season on the bench. Louis van Gaal has not so much reinvented him then as reverted him back to his original instincts to get forward. And he has done the job pretty well with 7 goals from midfield this season.

So it comes as something of a shock that the player is still banging on about being Manchester United’s anchor man. He is quoted as saying:

‘Yes I see myself as a defensive midfielder, I feel comfortable playing there and if the manager decides he wants to play me there, I will,’ Fellaini told Goal.

Fellaini showed true bravery to come back from the brink at Manchester United and so we wouldn’t put it past him to be a big player for the team in a more defensive position. Indeed, with more creatives expected to join the club this summer, the big Belgian may find that this is his likeliest route into the side.

For it to happen, his distribution still needs to improve but he showed last season that there is a good player in there and we think that he may still prove to be a decent shield for the defence.

He also mentioned that he thinks Manchester United will challenge for the title next season:

‘Of course we can catch Chelsea,’

‘We have the quality, I think we will sign some new players, so why not? We have to.

Manchester United fans: can Fellaini be a master of the defensive midfield?
