Good Signing

James Milner’s stock has risen dramatically over the last season as his contract has run down. He showed great form for Manchester City last season to move from the periphery of the squad to a more central role in the team, as the hard working antithesis to the more extravagant talents at the club.

So it seems like a very good deal for Liverpool, if they do beat their rivals to the punch, as has been reported over the last 24 hours. The Daily Mail says:

James Milner set to sign for Liverpool after snubbing £165,000-a-week contract offer from Manchester City

James Milner has held ‘positive talks’ about a transfer to Liverpool

The Manchester City midfielder, available on a free transfer in the summer, is poised to sign a long-term contract at Anfield in a major boost for Brendan Rodgers.

Obviously money wasn’t Milner’s main concern in his decision about the future. But with Arsenal also reportedly keen you have to imagine that Liverpool are going to end up paying him a tidy sum to the lad in wages.

Still, it could be a vital signing for the club, especially with the void being created by Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool departure. Milner may not replace the goal threat of Gerrard but he will work his socks off and keep the midfield full of energy.

He has also shown, particularly over the last year, that he has great consistency in his passing and crossing. Just like Gareth Barry, Milner’s time at City seems to have been good for his overall game. Because, even though he wasn’t playing all the time, he got to train with some of the world’s best.

Let’s take another look at Milner in action. Liverpool fans: is it a good signing or should Brendan Rodgers be prioritising the forward line for investment this summer?
