Now this is precisely what we need to spice things up in advance of the transfer window.

Manchester United are expected to throw their weight around in the transfer market again this summer and latest reports suggest that they have made a bid for two of the finest players that Europe can offer.

The Express states:

Man Utd see £110m DOUBLE SWOOP for Chelsea targets Bale and Varane rejected by Real

According to Spanish papers Cuatro and El Mundo Deportivo, the offer was made but immediately rebuffed by Real.

Gareth Bale

Last summer the thought of landing Bale was a fanciful one but this year he does seem more gettable. Certainly Manchester United appear to have the finances in place for such a bold move.

But incoming manager Rafa Benitez would surely be keen to keep his best players at Real Madrid and Bale is still one of those, despite an average year by some standards.

Until Rafa states his clear intention to keep the Welshman, this one will drag on.

Raphael Varane

Strangely enough we actually think that this would be the more difficult signing of the two, to get over the line. At 22 Varane has had to bide his time behind Pepe and Ramos at Real Madrid. But anyone who has seen him play will tell you that he’s easily good enough to eventually take the reins.

He reminds us of Rio Ferdinand with his pace, power and elegance. He’d be a wonderful addition and a player who could become a stalwart at Manchester United but we feel that Real Madrid will hold on.

The element that makes this story all the more interesting is Manchester United’s obvious bargaining chip – David de Gea. If he is to go to Madrid, Manchester United should absolutely play hard ball with their rivals and demand a player swap. This could tip the balance in terms of recruiting one of these stars.

Manchester United fans: is either deal doable?
