Liverpool closer to one smart deal but nowhere near the other yet – report

The Independent suggests that the deal to bring James Milner to Liverpool is getting closer to a successful conclusion but that the club have scoffed at the price being asked for Christian Benteke.

Liverpool close in on James Milner signing but baulk at Christian Benteke £32.5m release clause

Milner

The source reports that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to complete the deal this week. It’s a canny signing of a player whose stock has risen sharply after an excellent season for Manchester City. But he clearly wants to be central to the plans of a team and has perhaps been promised game time at Liverpool. While he may lack the finesse of the departing Steven Gerrard he will compensate by adding real energy and legs to the midfield.

Liverpool also said to be keen on Danny Ings but they patently lacked a strong, front line striker after Luis Suarez departed and with Daniel Sturridge sidelined for most of last season. The buyout clause for Benteke is £32.5m which may seem steep considering that he has just returned to form and fitness following serious injury which kept him out of the game for over year.

But if he does say fit from now on he’s worth every penny in today’s market. He’s almost a perfect Premier League Number 9 with his power and pace, but also his elegance on the ball. Liverpool should pay the going rate because, if they don’t, someone else will surely come in for the 24 year old.

Liverpool fans: two deals that mustn’t be missed?
