So close

Football can be a cruel game and, after coming so close to winning the league last season, Liverpool now look further away from the golden chalice than ever.

Debate rages about whether it’s time for Liverpool to cut ties with Brendan Rodgers, whose genius seems to have only extended to the period when Luis Suarez was in the side.

If he does stay on board he needs to get it right in the market this summer, because his record hasn’t been great. He can moan all he likes about injuries but he had time to replace Luis Suarez last summer and didn’t do it properly. Lambert and Balotelli were poor choices to replace the power, pace and dynamism of the Uruguayan.

Christian Benteke

He’s powerful, quick and would add much needed zest to the Liverpool attack. When everyone is fit, we think that Sterling and Sturridge could play either side of him in a narrow 4-2-3-1. It may be controversial to play Sturridge wider but we think he’s got the athleticism to do it and would be effective cutting in from the right and hitting the ball with his left foot.

Asmir Begovic

Simply put, he’s better than Mignolet.

Geoffrey Kondogbia

A beast of a 22 year old. He’s been playing in the defensive midfield for Monaco but he’s also a top defender and would be a brilliant choice for the heart of the defence, where Lovren just hasn’t done the business so far for Liverpool. Sakho and Kondogbia would be a nice pairing.

Fabio Coentrao

We think that Moreno has real potential but let’s get a seasoned pro in to take the reins for a while. Coentrao can’t get a game at Real Madrid but he’s a solid defender and an adventurous and skilful wide man. Would be an excellent addition.

Sami Khedira

He’s leaving Madrid this summer and would be a lovely addition to a squad which is clearly going to suffer with the departure of Gerrard. Liverpool need a leader and a safe pair of hands – Khedira would be a top buy.

So here is a Liverpool XI that we think would fair much better next season. The biggest question is of course whether Sterling stays.
