Over the last few years we have seen Manchester United fall off the pace in The Premier League and in Europe. And pace is central to the problem because Manchester United haven’t had enough.
Of course you need finesse to go with the ground speed. But when you look at the Champions of England you see the likes of Hazard and Willian destroying defences. In Europe, Real Madrid and Barcelona can get from one end of the park to the other in seconds with Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Bale and Ronaldo. Bayern do it with Robben and Ribery.
Manchester United badly need to address their lack of pace and the news that Memphis Depay has passed his medical, ahead of a move to Manchester United, should be music to the ears of the fans.
The BBC reports:
PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay has completed a medical at Manchester United.
The 21-year-old will finalise a £31m move to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens in June.
The 21 year old may still lack some of the aforementioned finesse. His ball control still needs to be more consistent. But he has all the raw materials to take Manchester United back to the top of the pile in England and Europe.
He’s got ridiculous pace in those powerful legs and he will make Manchester United immeasurably more explosive on the counter. He can get behind defences and, when he starts to mature, the mere fear of him will put the opponent on the back foot.
Along with another couple of top signings this summer, Depay will restore Manchester United’s fear factor at home and in Europe.
Let’s remind ourselves of the quality of the lad. Manchester United fans: the real deal?
