Manchester United looked dodgy at the back when the midfield diamond was employed earlier in the season. But, while the 3 centre back system has stemmed the flow of goals, they have hardly been convincing and the overall performance of the team has suffered.
At least it’s thrilling to watch when Manchester United go forward in this 4-4-2 diamond formation. Because, let’s face it, for long periods this season it’s been easy to lose interest in Manchester United games. Like Liverpool, they have lost their flow.
Di Maria functions best on the left of a midfield diamond and it’s the only system which seems to fit both Falcao and RvP in together with any comfort. With Michael Carrick amongst Manchester United’s best performers this season he is more than capable of playing at the base with Wazza at the tip and any one of Fellaini, Valencia, Herrera or Mata taking the other berth – dependent on the opposition.
If Manchester United had a defence that they could count on, this system would be perfect for the personnel available. It’s nothing that a really top centre back can’t sort out. Roll on the signing of Hummels.
So here is our XI for Leicester with more flow. Manchester United fans: let’s have your elevens for the weekend encounter which should surely see three more points for the deposed champions.
