With Glen Johnson, at times, looking like a casual marathon runner who has bitten off more than he can chew, Javier Manquillo yet to really impress and the excellent Jon Flanagan sadly still crocked with a knee injury, you can easily imagine that Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers will be looking to reinforce that right side before too long.
And reports suggest that Liverpool may be keen on an absolute belter. The Liverpool Echo reported today:
(Nathaniel) Clyne, who has impressed for the Saints all season, has yet to commit his long-term future to the club, leading to Saints boss Ronald Koeman reigniting his interest in Leeds defender Sam Byram.
Should Southampton land the 21-year-old Byram that would open the door for Liverpool to swoop for Clyne in the summer.
Many a list of The Premier League’s most improved players would have Nathaniel Clyne near the top.
He has been sensational for Southampton this season and last, earning himself a call up to the England squad in the process. Still just 23, Clyne has the sort of distribution and crossing ability that would make many a top level winger blush. He gets up and down that line with apparent ease. He’s quick, confident and aggressive – oh and he’s a pretty solid defender too.
Sadly, Southampton look as if they might have another major battle on their hands to keep hold of this lad. The Saints are flying but money talks and he could possibly double his wages at a club like Liverpool.
We see this one as a very low risk investment. Clyne has great feet and positional sense. But even if he does get caught flat-footed he’s got the pace to recover. His ability going forward would add dynamism to the Liverpool side and also afford Brendan Rodgers the flexibility to try different formations.
We think Clyne would be a great Liverpool buy. Let’s see him in action.
Reds fans: does he tickle your fancy?
