MLS fans may feel like this is another false dawn in the history of American soccer. Because, while a trickle of world-renowned players are once more arriving at clubs around The United States, they are typically players at the end of their careers.
But this is a necessary part of the process. Indeed, in its embryonic stages, The Premier League did exactly the same thing. Veteran players like Gianluca Vialli and Ruud Gullit came to England when money started pouring into The Premier League and they became the stepping stone for the stellar league that we see today.
We can see the same thing happening in America because the facilities are superb and interest in the game is at an all time high.
So it should come as little surprise to hear this week that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could move to La Galaxy when he leaves England at the end of the season.
British media outlet The Daily Mail reports that a big deal is in the offing:
Steven Gerrard is closing in on a £3.9million 18-month deal to sign for LA Galaxy
Gerrard has been one of Europe’s best players for the last dozen years. He’s a rare breed of box-to-box midfielders who provides multiple benefits to his team. He is a superb defender and reader of the game. His passing ability is imperious. And, in the final third, he comes alive with great goal after great goal – Gerrard has scored 180 goals in 695 club games and 21 in 114 caps for England.
Even at 34, this is a very special player who could get into most Premier League sides. MLS will certainly benefit from his class and LA Galaxy would have player almost as big as David Beckham if he did sign.
Let’s see some of Gerrard’s better moments. MLS and LA Galaxy fans: excited?
