Not long after Manchester United appointed Louis van Gaal as manager of the club questions were asked by the press about whether he had spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Talks were apparently planned during preseason but Van Gaal later revealed that he hadn’t been able to meet the Manchester United legend due to other commitments.
“No, until this moment I have not found the time to do that but I do not know if he is at home.
“It was in the planning that I would see him in the US [during pre-season tour] but he called off and I have also been very busy with a lot of things.”
But it would surely be crazy not to dip into the knowledge pool of Sir Alex, regardless of how brilliant a coach you are. And the Dutchman took the opportunity, in his press conference on Friday afternoon, to reveal that he has indeed been speaking to Mr. Ferguson about matters relating to Manchester United.
He said that Ferguson had congratulated him on the recent results.
‘I am focused on results – that’s the main important thing. When I speak with Sir Alex he says ‘not any problem, you have won!’ But for me it’s also the performance very important because when you perform well you shall win more. And that’s what I want to show to the fans and the players want to show that.
It was a stated intention of Louis van Gaal, when he took the reins at Manchester United, to entertain the fans. And he is clearly still hellbent on making this happen. The United faithful will be delighted with the way results have gone of late but Manchester United haven’t yet battered a side over 90 minutes this season, let alone in the last campaign. A total return to the level of past glories would surely have to include regular thumpings of the opposition.
But, with most of the injured Manchester United players returning in the next week or so, we believe that comprehensive victories are just around the corner under this superb manager.
