Louis van Gaal has something of a reputation for arrogance. We have to say that, while he is sure of his own abilities after a highly successful career, the most striking element of his character that we have seen is his honesty. Arrogance will have to take a back seat at least until he’s winning matches every week.
But for now we see a direct guy who is really refreshing in his honesty.
So it comes as no surprise to us to hear that Van Gaal doesn’t believe he deserves to be nominated on the shortlist for manager of the year – let alone win the prize.
Taking Holland to a World Cup semi-final with some really attractive football, from a team that looked quite weak before the tournament, is an amazing achievement. Van Gaal was one of the stand out managers in Brazil with his masterful tactical changes. But he thinks that his record at Manchester United should also count in any decision:
The Dutchman himself has been included in the coach of the year category, an honour he feels he may not be entitled to.
“It’s unbelievable when you see the results of Manchester United — it’s unbelievable.”
That tells you that, as well as being an honest man, Van Gaal is also a perfectionist. This is good news for Manchester United and the patchy results seem to have done little to dampen the support of the fans, who still strongly believe that they have the right man in charge.
