We find the sometimes brutal public opinion of Wayne Rooney is more a reflection of the English penchant for shooting down its most successful, rather than anything that he’s done wrong.
Maybe he did sleep with a woman old enough to be your grandma. And maybe he is a bit aggy at times. Perhaps it’s because he plays for Manchester United that he is so broadly criticised by the public.
But we think that he is a magnificent specimen of a man. He’s brave, strong, talented and direct. He’s a positive lad and he absolutely loves playing for his country.
In a heart-warming tale we discovered that he penned his own poem about how proud he was to play for England as a youth. Said The Guardian:
A young Wayne Rooney once shared his love of playing for his country with a self-penned poem, which he read out to his team-mates.
In the next few years the Manchester United star will break the England goalscoring record and may go on to take the record of most caps for England – a record which will, amazingly, also include goalkeepers, who tend to have much longer careers.
There is so little not to like about Wayne Rooney, yet even some Manchester United fans find it hard to love him.
We find it odd in the extreme. Because he’d always be the first name on our team sheet. And he’s probably a great guy to hang out with too. Here he is scoring a beauty for England as a teenager.
