Love him or hate him it’s hard to argue, with a clear mind, that Wayne Rooney hasn’t been absolutely vital to Manchester United over the last 10 years.
Many players seem to use the transfer market as a way of negotiating better contracts at their existing clubs and some felt that Wayne Rooney has done this twice over the last five years.
But Rooney would get top money wherever he played. And we genuinely believe that his reasons for wanting to leave were based on a paucity of playing quality at Manchester United rather than a simple yearning for more cash.
Rooney is a born winner and we have no doubt that Manchester United’s trophy haul would have been less impressive without him. He has graced some great United sides. But he’s also dragged more mediocre United incarnations to titles almost single-handedly. True Manchester United fans have to show this guy proper respect because, without him, the club would have found itself up pit creek without a shaddle.
So to hear him pledge his future to the club, while publicly diffusing any tension between him and Sir Alex, is music to the ears of most. The Guardian quotes him as saying:
Sir Alex is the best manager there’s been and for him to recognise my talent and want me to join this club was a great honour for me.
Rooney signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal in February, and said he intends to see it out.
“I hope so. I think the plan is I’ve just signed new long-term deal at the club and hopefully in five years’ time we’ll be sat down for [an interview to mark] 15 years. I don’t see any reason why not.”
At 28 Rooney once more has a great team around him. He may not even be the best player at the club any more. But the new captain certainly won’t be complaining about that. Because all he has ever wanted is to play for the best.

Lets see what kind of season he has now he has got Herrera, di Maria and Falcao playing alongside him. I seriously doubt he will still be a United player in 5 years though.
