Perfect choices

Whether planned or not, the appointment of Louis van Gaal has already had a multitude of benefits for Manchester United.

Because, he’s not only one the best coaches in the world. But he’s also emotionally detached from the Manchester United family. He has made decisions this summer with his heart rather than his head. And while some of those decisions have been unpopular we think that Louis has got it right on every front.

Danny Welbeck – Many were up in arms about his departure from the club. A Manchester lad and a player who had climbed his way up from the very bottom rung of the ladder at Manchester United, Welbeck seemed like part of the furniture.

But, at 23, Welbeck still hadn’t found an obvious function in the Manchester United team. He wants to play through the middle but he’s not a natural finisher.

He certainly isn’t going to get in ahead of Rooney and RvP and he doesn’t want to play wide. And while he can affect games with his pace and power, he will never score the amount of goals required to make him a top striker in a top team. His finishing just isn’t good enough. At Arsenal we will see a typically hard working and occasionally inspiring Welbeck. But he will still have to spend time on the bench when Giroud is fit – or go back out wide.

Chicharito – Another crowd favourite but another who Manchester United are fond of because of past achievements rather than current prowess. Hernandez works so hard for the team. But his first touch can let him down and he’s got no power in his shot. He looked like a world beater when he arrived and perhaps he can kick on at Real Madrid – albeit with perhaps even more bench time – but he hasn’t improved enough in his 4 years at Manchester United. And, given the choice, you would surely take Falcao instead?

Tom Cleverley – Few will be broken to see this guy leave. It seems like an obvious choice to make but David Moyes didn’t appear desperate to get rid of Cleverley. But he’s just not good enough for the United midfield and LvG has spotted it early.

Manchester United fans: has Louis made the right decisions with these three?
