Pace. Absolutely bags of it. That’s exactly what Manchester United need and lack right now.
Louis van Gaal has always made sure that his teams have it. And the best Manchester United sides over the years have always had it.
Players like Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Giggs, Ronaldo, Nani, Valencia, Evra and Rafael have allowed Manchester Untied to function with pace and success over the last 20 years. But with Wayne Rooney losing some of his pace over the last couple of years Manchester United have a real paucity in that department.
Marcos Rojo has great ground speed and Luke Shaw is no slouch. But Manchester United need to add more pace further up the park and that is probably why players like Angel di Maria have been linked.
But perhaps, in trying to sign players like Di Maria, Fabregas, and Ronaldo Manchester United have been overly ambitious over the last couple of years. They have traditionally done well by signing younger players with great potential- like Rojo.
Another such player, who we are stunned that van Gaal hasn’t yet brought in, is Memphis Depay.
The young Dutchman has pace to burn – he’s one of the most explosive players in the game. Perhaps there is an obvious weakness in his game that we haven’t yet seen – he does hold onto the ball for too long at times – but he is surely someone who can be develop into a top talent.
He wasn’t outclassed at The World Cup. Indeed he was one of the most eye-catching performers and even scored a goal during his cameo appearances.
With Tottenham seemingly interested, he has just turned down a new contract at PSV yet Manchester United’s interest seems luke warm.
One of the things that will appease Manchester United fans during these times of trouble is that they have a really top coach. If Louis van Gaal can’t bring the best out of such raw talents, which remind you so much of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, then who can?
Depay is gettable, hungry, jet-heeled and uber-talented. He would surely be a great investment and worth pursuing instead of over-hyped and ridiculously expensive players who have no sell on value.
What’s happened to the Manchester United philosophy of buying young potential?
Let’s see Depay in action. United fans: could you see Depay at Old Trafford?
