Reports today suggest that Barcelona right back, Dani Alves, could be heading to Liverpool. The Merseyside club are said to be leading the chase to land the flyer after it emerged that here has been no contact with Inter according to The Independent.
Reds ‘lead the race to sign’ Dani Alves after agent plays down Inter move
Now Alves’ agent Bibian Weggelaar has stated that Inter have never been in contact, apparently leaving Liverpool as the leaders in the race for his signature.
Alves, who has represented Brazil 79 times in his glittering career, has been at Barcelona since 2008, having joined from fellow Spanish side Sevilla where he made of 170 league appearances. Despite this lengthy service to the Catalan side, it now appears that 31-year-old is no longer wanted.
With their new manager looking to overhaul his playing staff, following a disappointing season in which Barcelona failed to win any major honours, it has become apparent that Alves does not feature in the plans of Luis Enrique.
In fact, Marca today reported that the veteran defender is set to be told today that he should look for a new club. Barcelona want to reinvigorate their side and his age marks him as one of the players that could make way for the younger generation.
This has put clubs across Europe on alert. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Alves is still widely seen as one of the better right backs operating in the top leagues and his experience would be a benefit to a whole host of teams.
While Inter Milan were previously thought to be the most likely destination for the defender, if he were to leave the Nou Camp, the latest news suggests otherwise.
This could put Liverpool in the driving seat. The opportunity to play in The Champions League and be part of a exciting new-look Liverpool team could persuade the Brazilian to move to Anfield. Nathan Gibson
