Liverpool have so far spent most of their summer investing in attacking talent.
There will also surely be some defenders to come in to what looked like a bit of a leaky defence last season.
But players like Markowic, Lallana, Lambert and Can will be expected to add goals and attacking verve to Liverpool next season.
But what the club doesn’t currently have going forward is a really top left footer – someone to get their boots white and deliver crosses from that left byline. Lallana is wonderfully two footed of course. But his most natural peg is probably his right. His injury may be another reason for Liverpool’s latest reported foray into the mark.
One player who has been rumoured to be moving clubs for the last few years is Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.
He was a massively hyped teenager but his trajectory has levelled off and he hasn’t quite fulfilled his huge potential.
But he had a really good season in the last campaign and is seemingly drawing attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs again.
Portuguese news outlet A Bola has reported that Liverpool are in for the lad. They say:
Liverpool prepares for €38 million Gaitán
Meanwhile The Independent reported Friday night:
Liverpool are believed to be in talks with Benfica regarding the transfer of sought after winger Nicolas Gaitan, with Brendan Rodgers looking to reinvest the money generated from Luis Suarez’s £75m sale in “the right players”.
Brendan Rodgers tends to have a fairly fluid attacking system. The formation changes regularly and last season we saw lots of interchanging between the forwards.
This system would suit Gaitan who is a winger by trade but, like so many modern wide men, loves to come inside. He’s a really graceful footballer who, at 26, is coming into his pomp.
The downside? Like Angel di Maria at Real Madrid he can bewitch with his skill but the question is whether he can gain the consistency required to become a really top player.
He can go missing at times but Gaitan has certainly got the talent to be a success at Liverpool if Brendan Rodgers can coax the best out of him on a regular basis.
Let’s see some highlights. Liverpool fans: keen?
