Manchester United have of course had some fantastic players over the last 20 years and, with the odd exception, maintain a very high standard in their transfers.
Over the last year Juan Mata has joined the club and, although he had a difficult first 6 months, under Louis van Gaal he already looks much more at home in the team than he did out wide under David Moyes.
But since the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003 you could argue that Manchester United haven’t really signed a flair player with real fairy dust.
But perhaps thats about to change as rumours grow that Manchester United are about to have a splurge on the Holland international Memphis Depay.
At 20 years of age he’s still a rough diamond but he looks as if he has all of the raw material required to be a really top and eye-catching player.
Most importantly, he looks like he has a football brain to go with that those amazingly quick feet of his. As well as being able to effortlessly skin a full back with pace and trickery, he’s got a howitzer of a shot on him and is also a set-piece specialist. Remind you of anyone? Indeed, Depay has been labelled ‘The Dutch Ronaldo‘ in some quarters.
Manchester United also lack pace at the moment. They are no slouches but the team lacks a really jet-hewed player since Antonio Valencia lost his very best pace.
Depay could offer that in bucket loads and we think that he’d been sensational signing to ring in the new era under Louis van Gaal.
A BBC journalist, Mike Keegan, earlier Tweeted that a move could be on. But he did add that Depay may well go back out on loan as part of a deal to Manchester United. Looking at him in action, it’s hard to word out why. This guy looks more than ready for The Premier League.
He’d be a far better value for money signing than someone like Angel di Maria who isn’t going to improve much more and would cost the earth.
At perhaps around £20 million Manchester United would be buying a 20 year old player whose potential is limitless. Let’s take a look at him in action.
