We were shocked, but not totally surprised, to read that Barcelona have not invested in one defender since 2009.
Barça are the only top European club not to sign defenders.
Since signing Dmytro Chyrgrynskiy in 2009, Barcelona have been dormant in the transfer market
It is of course an amazing statistic – but a beautiful policy. The last Barcelona vintage played the best football that we at soccersweep have ever witnessed.
Goals win games and Barcelona have been better at scoring them than every other team on the planet for most of the last six years.
But, especially in the last season, Barcelona had holes at the back and it’s a problem they will have to address sooner or later. Carlos Puyol has been an absolute legend for the club and his loss will be massive. Gerard Pique has just had his worst season for Barcelona and Maarc Bartra has yet to really flourish. As we all know, Javier Mascherano is a brilliant player but not a natural defender.
Marca has reported this week that Barcelona are trying to address the problem. They say:
Barcelona are continuing their search for defensive reinforcements. According to ‘Catalunya Ràdio’, one of the players on their hitlist is São Paulo’s 20-year-old Brazilian centre-back Rodrigo Caio, who can also play in midfield.
The lad apparently had a really good performance at the recent Toulon youth tournament. Although he may not be seen as the high profile addition that many Barcelona fans believe that the club needs, he may well represent a small step in the right direction for the future of the defence.
With FIFA Financial FairPlay rules kicking in Barcelona wont be able to spend big in this area, particularly after signing Luis Suarez, unless they offload more players to follow Sanchez and Fabregas.
Let’s see a brief clip of the lad in action. Barcelona fans: is buying young players the eight policy at this point?
