In one of the best World Cups in living memory, replete with attacking endeavour and excitement for the viewer, there were so many stand out performances.
Before ‘Bitegate’ Barcelona’s new star Luis Suarez put in some wonderful game time to destroy England with two amazing poacher’s strikes. James Rodriguez, Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba are other names that come immediately to the lips.
And one of the teams of the tournament was Holland who had Robben and van Persie in tandem to devastating effect up top.
But the Dutch will also be remembered for some breakthrough performances by several younger players plying their trade on home soil. Chief amongst those had to be Daley Blind.
You would struggle to find a better deliverer of the ball from the left hand side than this guy. He crossed the ball for van Persie’s wonderful headed goal and put in one top performance after another for the Dutch.
Although he plays for a huge club already you imagine that it will only be a matter of time before a big bid goes in for him this summer.
Barcelona are apparently the latest showing interest and may look at signing him if other targets don’t come to the club.
Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo says:
Pending the resolution of the Mathieu case ‘, Barca has explored Barça recruiting other players. Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Vertonghen (Tottenham), Schär (Basel) and Blind (Ajax).
He (Blind) is a defender capable of occupying any position and even dropping back to midfield. One of its virtues is its physical capacity.
While we see him more as a full back he is an adaptable player who can do a job in several positions. We definitely think he is a Barcelona type of player in that he has great technique and is a rather cavalier defender who is arguably as good going forward as he is defending.
Let’s see the lad in action. Barcelona fans: a decent substitute for Mathieu?
