Liverpool have been linked with a £15 million move for Real Madrid defensive midfielder Sami Khedira.
Brendan Rodgers is looking to add depth and quality to his squad as Liverpool attempt to juggle Champions League and Premier League duties next season, and a holding midfielder is a top target according to The Metro.
The same source reports that they could face competition from Chelsea though. Khedira worked under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid during the Portuguese’s time as manager at the club.
Khedira has previously been linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal. The Gunners are in need to a strong defensive midfielder, it being highlighted as one of the key areas that needs improvement alongside a striker and right back.
Manchester United meanwhile could well see a summer overhaul with the impending arrival of Louis van Gaal as manager.
Real Madrid have reportedly made it clear that they were willing to let the defensive midfielder leave during the summer as they look for other options in the middle of the park.
You could easily imagine Liverpool finding space for another box to box midfielder with Steven Gerrard taking up an increasingly defensive position in the autumn years of his career.
William Carvalho has been linked with a possible move to the Spanish giants as a replacement for the German.
Despite coming back from a long-term injury this season and seeing little game time, Khedira is part of the German national side at The World Cup and started in the first game against Portugal.
He began his career at VfB Stuttgart, breaking into the senior side in 2006.
The 27 year old went on to make 98 league appearances for the German outfit before a move to Real Madrid in 2010.
He has since become a regular in the Spanish giants’ side and helped them to the La Liga title in 2012 as well as the Copa del Rey in 2011 and 2014 and this year’s Champions League trophy.
