FERGIE got one thing badly wrong

From the perspective of neutrals we have to say that we find it incredible that the fans turned on Sir Alex Ferguson last night. Having picked the club up off the floor when he took over in the mid-eighties, he gave the fans joy again.

The reason why the expectation levels are so high at Manchester United is because of him. The reason why the Manchester United fans can still defiantly sing about 20 titles is solely down to him. And the reason that so many of them can squeeze into Old Trafford to watch Manchester United is because of him.

Sir Alex Ferguson built this Manchester United from the ground and we can’t abide fans abusing the godfather of Of Trafford – it’s simply WRONG. The Guardian reports:

Manchester United supporters vented their anger at the former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the shambolic 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford. In the first signs of open revolt at David Moyes, fans furiously questioned Ferguson’s decision to appoint the Scot as his replacement.

Fergie made a few mistakes in his time at Manchester United – the odd expensive flop like Berba or Veron. But, if he made one huge error, it was in selecting David Moyes as his successor. Manchester United fans are clearly angry and frustrated. But Fergie doesn’t deserve the abuse. It should be directed at the man who is masterminding the fall from grace.

Fergie obviously chose Moyes with the best intentions and thought he was the man for the job. Regular readers of soccersweep will know that we felt the same. So it’s been an unpleasant surprise to see the man failing on a monumental scale since he took the reigns.

Even the great Sir Alex must be having second thoughts about his decision now. We can’t believe for a second that he hasn’t had doubts about David Moyes after such an apocalyptically bad season for Manchester United. But we thick that the ire should be directed at Moyes and The Glazers for not sacking him. But to drag Fergie into this after all he has done for the club is beyond insulting.
