So the season seems to be getting ever closer to officially being categorised as a write off. How many times have we said that about Manchester United by March over the last twenty years? Not many anyway. Perhaps during the Laurent Blanc years.
The great thing about Fergie was that if Manchester United did have a bad season they would always come back stronger.
Under David Moyes you get the feeling that, not only are the opposition less scared of the team, but the players have little to no trepidation of the manager. He doesn’t strike fear into the players in the way Sir Alex did.
If he does get the keys to the ‘war chest’ however, then significant amounts of cash will be spent this summer. One of the players who has been most strongly linked over the last few months is Bayern Munchen midfielder Toni Kroos. The tabloids have gone as far, this week, as to suggest that Manchester United are ready to table a massive offer for the player. The Metro said:
Manchester United are ready to offer Toni Kroos a deal worth £250,000-a-week in order to convince the midfielder to leave Bayern Munich.
Kroos, who has already confirmed he has rejected the offer of a new contract at Bayern, is said to have fallen out with the Bundesliga giants due to a row about wages.
It’s thought that the Red Devils will offer the play-maker a cool £250,000-a-week to switch to Old Trafford – a whole £150,000-a-week more than Bayern are currently offering him.
So Manchester United do appear to have the upper hand over some other elite clubs in as much as they are so desperate to bring back the glory that they are prepared to dwarf players’ current wages – even players at elite clubs.
“There is not a single player who’s worth changing your entire wage structure for. Nobody’s indispensable. If the player wants to stay at Bayern, I can only advise him not to overplay his hand.”
It’s rather surprising that, with so many superstars in their squad, Bayern seemingly still don’t pay anywhere near as much to their top earners as Manchester United do.
In times like these Manchester United will take any advantage that they can get. If their offer for Kroos is that much more than he currently earns then it may be too good a deal to turn down for the sensational German. Manchester United’s biggest problem could be that other elite clubs may enter the race.
Let’s see the lad in action.
