Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer market so far in January. But Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers made his opinions about transfers quite clear last night when he told the press that he’s still looking to do significant business before the window closes.
The midfield still needs strengthening and, having lost out to Chelsea for winger Mohammed Salah last week, perhaps Liverpool will be trying to sign someone for the wide midfield areas.
One player who has been prominent amongst the gossip columns this week is Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka. The 24-year-old has set tongues wagging over the last year or so with some fantastic performances for his current club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
The Daily Express says of Konoplyanka:
LIVERPOOL have launched a bid to sign Ukraine international Yevhen Konoplyanka as Brendan Rodgers seeks a “major” signing before the transfer window closes.
The Anfield club has targeted the 24-year-old after missing out on Mohamed Salah last week when Chelsea gazumped them for the Basel winger.
Rodgers, buoyed by last night’s rampant 4-0 victory over city rivals Everton, said: “Hopefully we can have a major signing before the window shuts.
With the news, SkyBet opened up a market on the player’s next club, if he does leave in January. Liverpool are odds on favourites with the bookie for his signature at 1/10.
Since joining Dnipro as a teenager in 2007 he has slowly become a central figure in the side scoring 25 goals in 125 appearances. He also has eight goals in 35 caps for the Ukraine national side.
Apparently the player would cost in the region of £15m to sign. The Liverpool boss surely wouldn’t fan the flames of speculation if he didn’t think that a signing was in the offing. With speculation rife that Liverpool make a move for the Ukrainian this could be that major signing in January.
There has been quite a lot of talk about wide men in relation to Liverpool during the transfer window. Yesterday ex-Liverpool man Tom Ince was rumoured to be interesting his old club earlier this week. But the youngster is in talks with a host of smaller clubs about a move, leading many to believe that Mr.Rodgers isn’t pursuing a move for the player.
