It’s hard to think of a time when this tie hasn’t been above averagely entertaining. However little there is to play for you can almost guarantee a wholehearted affair between Liverpool and Everton. As it happens, these two have everything to play for this season.
Both Everton and Liverpool have serious aspirations for Champions League football next term. Liverpool are still in with a serious shout for the title, with Suarez and Sturridge on fire for most of the season. As for Everton, their new brand of football under Roberto Martinez has surprised and impressed many in this campaign.
But Everton have been blighted by injury and Ross Barkley was expected to be a particularly notable absentee from this game. He’s exactly the sort of player that Everton need in an away match of this size – someone who can take the game to Liverpool when his team is under pressure. His presence will be a massive bonus for Everton.
