Many had thought that Manchester United’s record-breaking signing Juan Mata would be given the number seven shirt on his arrival into the squad. You have to say that he fits the mould perfectly for a number seven. He’s got the skills, balance, daring and creative touch that all of the most famous players who have represented Manchester United over the years in that position have had.
But it has become clear over the last few moments that the player will actually wear the number eight for Manchester United – the number vacated by the departed Brazilian Anderson, who left for Fiorentina last week
Mata said that ‘number 8 is a great number’. It will take some of the pressure off the player who comes in to the club as a record transfer. The number 7 jersey may have been an albatross around the neck of the player as he tries to assimilate into Manchester United.
He also stated that at the start of the press conference that ‘what I like most about this club is the character’
