If reports are to be believed then West Ham are most likely to reinforce their forward line during the winter window.

While the boss is likely to look for quality in all areas, there is a patent lack of goals coming from the West Ham forward line, at this time. West Ham need a player who can get them a goal every two games and put in a shift when he pulls on the shirt.

Following on from links with pretty much every journeyman striker in Europe, West Ham are now being linked with an ex-Newcastle player, Obafemi Martins.

The 29-year-old who currently plies his trade with the Seattle Sounders in America has a decent scoring record wherever he has played. Furthermore, since his international debut in 2004, he has scored 18 goals in 39 games for Nigeria.

He also played for West Ham boss Sam Allardyce while at Newcastle.

Martins is an agile and athletic player who still retains the physical prowess to do some damage in The Premier League. We think that he would be a decent signing but that West Ham would need to buy another striker to further complement the forward line. The Telegraph says of the link:

The Hammers are desperate to sign a new striker as soon as the transfer window re-opens and Martins has joined Diego Forlan and Diego Milito as an overseas loan option.

Martins is currently with MLS side Seattle Sounders and could be available for loan during the off-season in America.

But Sam Allardyce has said he knows nothing about such speculation. Big Sam said:

“I haven’t heard anything about Oba,” said Allardyce. “He’s playing in America at the moment.

“Everyone knows if we’re in the market for a player, we’ll be linked with everybody. We’ll deal with that – speculation is speculation.”

West Ham fans, would Martins be a short-term gem or do you think that he would fail to fulfil the team’s immediate requirements?
