Watching the contrast between a Ross Barkley inspired Everton midfield and Manchester United last night, was a stark reminder of how bad things have become in the engine room at Old Trafford.
At the age of 40 and with five minutes to go Ryan Giggs looked like the only player carrying the fight to Everton. Manchester United had been run ragged in the previous 89 minutes by the young Everton midfielder. Ironically, he represents exactly what Manchester United are missing.
The great thing about Barkley is his adaptability. He is strong in the tackle and can guard the defence brilliantly. But he is also a superb attacking midfielder with great passing ability and a constant desire to dribble.
He’s exactly the sort of dynamic player Manchester United need. But instead they are today being linked with yet another defensive midfielder. As if Manchester United haven’t learned their lesson by buying Marouane Fellaini another player, with similar characteristics, is being linked to the club today.
The Guardian says that United want ex-Chelsea man Nemajna Matic and are prepared to pay big money for him.
Potentially arriving at Old Trafford meanwhile is Benfica’s Nemanja Matic, who is up for grabs with a £20m price tag swinging around his neck – Borussia Dortmund have also been linked
Is David Moyes buys this guy then some United fans will want to give up football altogether – or pray for a new manager. United need a player who is going to take the game to the opposition. Someone who will receive the ball and look forward instead of backwards. Increasingly, United are playing the game in their own half and they need a buccaneering attack-minded midfielder who will frighten the opposition and create chances for the brilliant froward line. Matic is a decent player but he isn’t going to fulfil those functions.
Many United fans will hope that this transfer rumour has no substance whatsoever. Let’s see the defensive midfielder in action.
