As we slide into December the hype begins to intensify about January deals and verbal agreement are made.

The first out of the blocks, where the Premier League is concerned, appears to be Liverpool. Onlookers have been suggesting that Liverpool will look to strengthen in the centre of midfield and also in the full-back positions during the winter window.

One of those areas looks like it may well be covered at the start of January. This is because reports today suggest Liverpool are in talks with Barcelona about signing their versatile full-back Martín Montoya. A player of real pedigree, who has already placed at U21 level for Spain, can operate at either left or right full-back.

His opportunities to shine have apparently been limited by the strength of Barcelona’s first team and specifically the form of Brazilian mainstay Dani Alves.

The Guardian says:

The Spain Under-21 international, who can operate in both full-back positions, is out of contract at the end of this season and his availability has alerted leading clubs throughout Europe. The 22-year-old and his agent have both claimed recently that he hopes to sign a contract extension with the Spanish champions but Liverpool are exploring the prospect of a permanent deal in January.

We believe that this looks like a real coup for Liverpool who would be signing a player from one of the best schools of world football. Anyone who has trained for Barcelona tends to have a great touch and understanding of the game. At just 22 years of age he has his whole career in front of him and won’t cost a huge amount of money. Therefore the gamble, on Liverpool’s part, is minimal.

Let’s have a look at the lad in action. Liverpool fans would you be happy with this signing or do you think that Liverpool should be investing in more established and high-profile stars?
