West Ham have had a decent start to the season but are lacking firepower up front. Andy Carroll has had a stop start autumn due to injury and, as West Ham’s main striker, he is sorely missed.
At some stage West Ham will need to spend more money on the striking department. Which brings into sharp focus an interview given by Jermaine Defoe over the last day or so.
He talks about his acrimonious departure from West Ham and the sadness that he still feels about it. He told The Independent:
“We’re talking about leaving the club I was in love with at the time because I came through the youth system with my friends, the fans loved me there. They were brilliant – every game they sang my name.
“The person who represented me at the time said, ‘You need to hand in a transfer request and get in early because all the lads are going to leave’.
“The backlash was crazy. I felt like I was on my own and people were absolutely abusing me.
Football is a ruthless industry and footballers can often look like mercenaries. You often hear the stories about how they only have 15 year career spans so they have to earn as much money as quickly as possible. What a load of rubbish. Even players at smaller Premier league clubs can earn more in a week than most of us earn in a year.
But the sad truth is that the cream generally rises to the top in football and ambition is what makes players successful in this very competitive industry. But Jermaine Defoe clearly still feels a big affiliation with West Ham.
Even though he has been an excellent player for Tottenham he seems surplus to requirements at the club. You can easily imagine him moving in the next six months to one year. The question is do the West Ham fans still hate Defoe for leaving them in the manner he did all those years ago? Or would The Hammers welcome him back with open arms if he did want to return to the club?
At the end of the day most fans simply want to see their club winning and Jermaine Defoe would be an excellent addition to the West Ham side. He’s still quick and mobile and has a wonderful eye for goal. We think that he has been undervalued at Tottenham and could probably do with a change.
A return to West Ham for Defoe would make a lot of sense if the fans could forgive him. Let’s remind ourselves of the quality of the lad.

No games at Spurs so all of a sudden he decides he liked it at West Ham. Spurs always overcharge for sales (especially to West Ham) so he will cost more than he’s worth. If he loves us so much will he take a pay cut to rejoin? Not a chance, he’s a money grabber ( and he’s not getting any appearance money at present!) and he’s overpaid at Spurs so let him stay there unless we get him on a free with lower wages.

It is quite scandalous that the West Ham executives have started the season without a decent fit striker and we should jump at the chance to sign such quality as Defoe, He will score the goals and guarantee a top half finish. The anti brigade are probably those types that boo West Ham greats like Paul Ince and Frank Lampard and should be completely ignored.

I would love to see Defoe back feeding off of Andy Carrol’s knockdowns. This would be a potent strike force.
