Manchester United look in the mood to spend. Over the summer, names like Bale, Ronaldo and Fabregas were mentioned. Each of those stories had some substance but none of the deals came off.
But, after a turbulent start to the season, it appears that David Moyes will most likely look to strengthen in the winter window. But even if he spent upwards of £40m on a player there is no guarantee that this footballer would be good enough to grace the famous and currently vacant No.7 shirt.
Worn by the likes of Beckham and Ronaldo this shirt has always been one of the most glamorous at Manchester United and, as Antonio Valencia’s recent abdication has proved, it’s a shirt that can weigh heavy on the shoulders.
But Manchester United have a player in their ranks who looks as wearing the number 7 jersey wouldn’t faze him one bit. Adnan Januzaj is exactly the sort of schemer that would do the shirt justice. A superb talent, the like of which we haven’t seen since Ronaldo started performing wonders at Manchester United.
The Manchester United teenager has recently signed a 5 year contract so his future at the club is secure. Who better to make history as Manchester United’s number 7?
Watching him play last night, with menace and mercurial precision, it’s almost impossible to imagine that this guy is just 18. He has not only become undroppable in a few shorts months but one wonders if he could solve Manchester United’s creative midfield problem.
He has mainly played on the wings so far and done a super job there. But last night he played more centrally and some might argue that a player this good has to stay in the middle, orchestrating the whole team.
Manchester United have lacked a magical attacking midfielder since Paul Scholes was in his pomp. Someone who can pass with precision and variety. Someone with a razor sharp football brain who can unlock a defence with a threaded ball or a cheeky lob. And someone who can scores goals arriving late from the midfield.
Januzaj can undoubtedly do all of this. But he can also beat a man with the best dribbling skills in the Manchester United squad. All these qualities would make him a sensational central midfielder.
Wherever he plays this guy is going to be the next superstar of Manchester United.
