Tottenham

Is this striker really worth the money?

In a momentary escape from the most protracted, re-hashed transfer story ever (AKA Leandro Damiao to Tottenham), the papers are today speculating that Tottenham will go for Barcelona reject David Villa this summer.

The Spain international, who has suffered serious injury in the last couple of years, is rumoured to be making a move to England in the close season, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly chief among him suitors.

Yes he was a good finisher a couple of years back but he’s never been deemed integral to Barcelona and let’s face it, you sir, yes YOU could probably get close to the 15 goals that he has achieved this season for Barcelona given the service that Villa has had.

I don’t mean to besmirch a player of undoubted class and professionalism – this guy has 53 goals in 88 games for his country and scored 108 in just 166 games for Valencia – but surely 14m Euros is a little excessive for someone who turns 32 in December?

These are of course rumoured figures only. Tottenham, Arsenal or Liverpool may actually get him for a knock down price and, a la Klinsmann, Villa could become the signing of the season even in his autumn years. Arsenal need a goal-scorer too. Perhaps Villa is the answer.

But, wouldn’t Tottenham fans prefer to sign a young whipper snapper who is all energy and promise and could potentially give his best years to the club, rather than a journeyman who has seen it all and is after a final big payday before he hotfoots it back to Spain to hang out in the province that he has just bought with his Tottenham wages?

Let’s hear the thoughts of Tottenham and Arsenal fans on this one.

    9 goals in 15 league apps, this season, suggests he is (still) MORE than a decent striker now. Not sure when Spurs became TOO big for one of the best strikers of his/their generation, but I ,for one, would love to see Villa plying his trade at WHL, next season. I expect Bale and co would too!

    Levy will no doubt get the best (cheapest) possible deal for the club, so I don’t see finance being an issue
    (for supporters) If DL deems we can afford the player, than we will place an offer!!!

    Make no mistake, Villa WILL have a point to prove when/if he moves clubs. He will want to show that he STILL has it, to people like yourself who question, at 31/32, his ability to be successful at the highest level. David will also want show that the biggest club in the world made a mistake by under using him in his preferred role. The fact that a World cup is on the horizon will mean that Spain’s record goalscorer will want to add to his tally, for his nation, at the next competition. Not to add the incentive of proving his worth in another league…What better way to cement a legacy!!!

    In my mind, only injury can prevent Villa being a success at his next club. The notion that whoever gets him will be acquiring a (mere) ‘journeyman’ is nonsense;

    They will instead be obtaining a player who has as much quality, as he does experience. A match-winner, in the truest sense of the word…

    David Villa went to Barca because it was his dream move, sadly for him the style of play doesn’t suit him as a striker, but given the oppertunity he’d probably recapture the form that he was once prolifically acclaimed, and would be a great signing for tottenham as Dempsey and Defoe aren’t good enough to compete for top honors and Villa clearly is, most of you are 1 Dimentional and stupid to think he’d be better off at arsenal. #outofyourminds!
