Manchester United to sign flair in place of hair

Manchester United are rumoured to be ready to offload midfielder Anderson this summer. Reports today suggest that his old club Porto may come back in for the player. After 6 average seasons at Manchester United Anderson is popular with the fans but clearly not a favourite with Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s quite easy to see why.

Anderson has flirted with brilliance from time to time but rarely a month passes without the boss talking about ‘consistency’. For whatever reason – be it injury or a lack of dedication – Anderson has never had command of this quality. When he arrived at Manchester United the fans were wetting themselves at the prospect of having a young attacking midfielder from Brazil in their ranks. At the time, all of the Youtube clips of Anderson illustrated a player full of tricks and flicks and no little goalscoring intent. Sadly his football has been as unpredictable as (and somewhat less enjoyable than) his range of unconventional hairdos.

Some think that is Ferguson has misused Anderson and blunted his attacking ability by playing him further back in midfield. But any regular viewer of Manchester United will know that Anderson certainly isn’t a natural finisher – for long spells he looked like he couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo.

So the player has probably been deployed in his rightful position but has never hit the heights on a regular basis. He always shows plenty of commitment when he is on the park and this is probably why he’s been such a popular player with Manchester United fans. But even his most ardent supporter would probably tell you that, overall, he has under-achieved in his time at the club.

So now is probably the right time to bid farewell. Porto are reportedly interested and this may bring about an interesting swap deal. Most Manchester United fans will be aware of the long-term speculation linking Porto’s James Rodriguez with a move to the club. Anderson could now be used as a makeweight by Fergie to finally snare the goal-scoring winger.

soccersweep thinks that Rodriguez is exactly what Manchester United need – an incisive and exciting winger to raise the bar at Old Trafford after a poor year for the current wide men. Wilfried Zaha will be given a chance on the right and, as a natural left-footer, Rodriguez may be the solution on the opposiute flank.

Let’s have another look at him shall we? Yes, let’s!
