Ahh, Manchester United’s midfield. Now theres a subject we haven’t discussed for a while. While most onlookers believe that United need a truly top addition in the middle of the park, to bring the team to the boil, Sir Alex has kept faith with The Brazilian Terry Gibson (Anderson), Micky metronome (Carrick), the unfortunate Darren Fletcher and the two golden oldies. While Ryan Giggs still looks like a teenager chasing a pair of panties in the wind, Paul Scholes’ sublime career is coming to a close – again.
Apart from that, Manchester United have Tom Cleverley, who could go either way. Some feel that the jury is out on Cleverley. Others opine that the jury hasn’t even been chosen yet. soccersweep thinks he’s a decent player but he lacks consistency and never dominates games. Then there’s Shinji Kagawa, who sort of defies any conventional position on the field. He’s very skillful but perhaps a little lightweight for the pivotal role as central attacking midfielder. Time will tell.
It’s not as if Fergie is threadbare in midfield then. Most squads would be delighted with such a selection. But there remains a feeling that Manchester United lack a superstar midfielder to help them dominate in Europe. The boss has tried to bring such a footballer to the club, but he’s found this task harder than a cage fighter’s knee.
Owen Hargreaves was bought for big money but fell by the wayside due to a cruel battle with injury. Sneijder was strongly linked for over a year but the cost of bringing him to Old Trafford proved prohibitive – now he’s playing in Turkey. Then there was Luka Modric – another who was rumoured to be heading to Manchester United for a couple of years before he finally went to Real Madrid. That hasn’t worked out for him and he may yet be seen as the answer for Fergie in the summer.
But another name that has resurfaced in relation to Manchester United is that of Joao Moutinho. The Guardian reckons that some other paper reckons that United are in the queue, with Chelsea and Tottenham, for the clever Porto playmaker. A player who last gave the ball away in the early 90s.
At 26, Moutinho represents a younger, probably cheaper version of Modric and does pretty much the same thing. He’s neat and tidy. He’s not a prolific scorer but uses possession well and moves the ball forward quickly and incisively. In short, he’s the archetypal modern midfielder who adds fluidity and speed to the team.
