Manchester United after multi-million midfield maestro – reports

The rumours doing the rounds over the last 24 hours are linking Manchester United with a bid for the largely out of favour Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric. The impish Croatian reminded his current employers of his value, with a super goal against The Reds, after coming on as a sub in the Champions League tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford last week.

But the player, who cost in the region of £33m last summer, hasn’t been a regular in the team, with Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso and Mezut Ozil stealing the limelight in the engine room.

The Metro suggests that Luka is ‘receptive’ to the idea of joining Manchester United in the summer. He was heavily linked with the club before he moved to Madrid and Sir Alex Fergsuon is a known admirer of the player. Despite his brilliant goal in that game, Modric is not a natural goal scorer and, at 27, he’s not exactly an investment for the future. But if Manchester United decide that they need a smooth operator in midfield – someone who links the play beautifully – then Modric could be a viable option. Ever since Paul Scholes started to wane, criticism of Manchester United has been focused on the midfield area, with many believing that the team lacks a genuine superstar in the middle of the park.

But, only one year into his contract in Spain, Modric would still cost a pretty penny if he were to leave Madrid. Manchester United would have to pay upward of £20m if they were serious about taking the player.

i have said for years now modric would be ideal…however it wont happen……i have felt sorry for carrick as i believe he has never had a partner in CM who is world class and in his prime…..he has either had giggs and scholes who are world class but too old……or fletcher who simply isnt good enough…or cleverly who is a fine player and has helped carrick energy wise but he isnt a superstar….modric would be exactly what we need…he would get the ball and link the play between forwards and midfield effortlessly and smoothly….carrick would be able to either stay deep or join in attack with him dependant on what type of game it was..and modrics intelligent play would blend beautifully with kagawa and RVP……plus we would have a goal threat from CM which we dont have at the minute…..however it wont happen….fergies adamant the youth system will be his legacy which means players like welleck cleverly etc will be prefferred which means its another season of the fowards rescuing us again…..it sounds daft 12 points clear but i fear for next year…if chelsea get a world class manager and city get their act together united could be blown out of the water…we have really got by because of whats happened behind the scenes at chelsea and city……..and got by with better team spirit…however as the second half showed yesterday this is a pretty limited united side….poor wingers…decent CM…..and hit and miss defenders..ide love modric…but i am afraid its another season of talking about wellbecks “workrate”
