Could the legend really return?

There has been speculation for at least the last 6 months, surrounding the future of Portuguese superstar and ex-Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo. When Ronaldo first implied that all wasn’t well with him at The Bernabeu, we all assumed that this was a simple ploy to negotiate the best contract extension possible at Real Madrid.

After an initially bizarre response from the supporters of Real Madrid, Ronaldo has forced his way into their hearts with his goal scoring feats and all round talent. Ronaldo is a talisman for Madrid in the truest sense. But there is usually no smoke without fire and today The Metro reports a new wave of rumours coming out of Spain which suggest that the Mediterranean magician is to be sold this summer, in order to generate funds for a squad overhaul.

Real president Florentino Perez is apparently miffed by Ronnie’s refusal to sign a new contract and will look to refresh the team with Ronaldo money in the close season. Now, before RVP joined Manchester United I would have disregarded this story out of hand. But since the Dutchman went Old Trafford I never say never in terms of transfers.

It does seem bizarre that Real Madrid would want to get rid of their best player, especially when they’re already trailing in the wake of Barcelona. How do they plan to catch up with the Catalans without the magic feet of Ronaldo? If they can’t compete with him, then they haven’t a hope in hell without him.

So, we are dubious about that end of the tale. But Sir Alex Ferguson retains a special bond with the player and has spoken many times about the possibility of him coming back to Manchester United. But, every time the prospect is discussed with Sir Alex, the Scot reiterates that any deal might be too costly for Manchester United.

‘What would you think his value would be? He’s definitely unbuyable.’

‘Who could afford to buy him?’

‘There’s talk of the Russians, perhaps. But do you think he would go to Russia?

‘He complained about the weather here, let alone the middle of winter in Russia. He was definitely good value for Madrid but he always wanted to play for them, it was his boyhood dream.’

It’s true that Ronaldo would cost a small fortune to bring back to Manchester United but there is a glint in the eye when Fergie talks about the player and he may just surprise us all with a bid should Ronnie decide that his future does lie away from The Bernabeu.

I dont think they could afford his return, City could although he has said he wont sign, but that dont cut with me, if City offered him a huge contract he would be all over it..
