These are turbulent times at The Emirates, with Arsenal’s recent loss to League 2 side Bradford being the low point of the season so far.  The January transfer window offers the prospect of redemption for under pressure manager Arsene Wenger.  Let’s look at who might arrive at and leave The Emirates next month.

Going?

Andrei Arshavin – The 31-year-old Russian will be eligible for a free transfer come the summer and this is the last opportunity for Arsenal to redeem some of the £15m they initially paid for his services.  A move back to Russia, possibly to former club Zenit St.Petersburg, might yet be a possibility.  William Hills are offering odds of around 11/8 that Arshavin departs in January.

Marouane Chamakh – The striker’s 11 goals for Arsenal in 2010 must seem but a distant memory for the out-of-favour Moroccan, who has started only one Premiership game all season.  His feeble effort in the penalty shoot out loss to Bradford, in The League Cup, was the latest illustration of his poor form.  Last month The Mail reported that Fenerbahce might be interested in securing his services and one would imagine that Wenger would be only too keen to send him on his way.

Andre Santos – The Brazilian has become an object of ridicule for the Arsenal faithful, following a series of defensive blunders, since his arrival from Fenerbahce last year.  Having been axed from the club’s Champions League squad it is apparent that Santos is  no longer wanted at The Emirates.  SportsMole are reporting that a return to his homeland is imminent.

Coming?

Stephan El Shaarawy – The attacking midfielder/forward has been a major reason for the re-emergence of AC Milan in recent months.  Arsene Wenger is known to be a fan of the  20-year-old Italian international, whose mobility, technical proficiency, versatility and tender age would make him an ideal acquisition for The Gunners.  A number of media outlets including The Express have been speculating that the player could arrive as early as next month.

Raheem Sterling – The 18-year-old has been an inspiration for Liverpool this season with his explosive pace and close dribbling skills a source of terror for Premiership defences. To date the youngster has been stalling over a new contract and there is a growing line of suitors rumoured to be willing to pay big money to lure Sterling away, including Arsenal who might, according to The Mirror, be prepared to offer contract rebel Theo Walcott plus money in exchange.

Dusan Basta – Arsenal have been defensively suspect for much of this season and it is no surprise that Wenger has been linked with a host of possible new defensive acquisitions.  With Bacary Sagna rumoured to be leaving for pastures new at the end of the season,  The Metro have been speculating that the arrival of the dynamic and defensively sound Udinese and Serbian right back, who can also play on the right wing may happen as early as next month.
