Is SAF about to spend another £25m?

Various media outlets are suggesting that Manchester United will spend large sums on their defence as early as January. With a defensive injury list as long as a broken arm it is natural for the newspapers to whip up a transfer frenzy and the name on the lips of many is Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels.

Described by Zinedine Zidane as the best player at Euro 2012, the 23 year old enjoyed a fantastic season for club and country last time out with consistently towering displays that did much to win the title for Dortmund. With 12 goals in 100 appearance for the German outfit, Hummels also likes to contribute further forward – a common trait of Manchester United centre backs down the years.

We at soccersweep think that it’s still a bit premature to be talking about Manchester United signing more defenders in the winter window. The club has had rotten luck at the back in the last couple of years but, when everyone is fit, they still have a wealth of options. With Jones and Smalling looking to cement their places in the team over the next couple of years, Keane and Wooton knocking on the door, and Ferdinand and Vidic still offering much when fit, Manchester United may just need better luck rather than more players.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility however, that Manchester United will add another defender and Hummels ticks all the boxes in terms of skill, character and age. Perhaps Fergie will return to Dortmund for another splurge come January.
