The Mirror and other media outlets are suggesting that Liverpool may be looking to get Newcastle hitman Demba Ba on the cheap. Apparently a clause in his contract will allow him to leave for as little as £7m if a deal is done soon.
If this story had cropped up in the winter window Liverpool fans would be licking their lips in anticipation. But, as is the way with so many strikers, Ba’s red hot streak ended after the first half of the season and he spent 2012 in the shadow of Newcastle’s new recruit, Papa Cisse, who took up the mantle of the central striker while Ba ploughed wider areas.
So the goals dried up in the second half of the season but when you see the quality of some of his earlier goals you have to be impressed. Liverpool need an alternative to Andy Carroll – a second target man who can increase competition for places, profit from the creativity of Luis Suarez and share the goal burden. Whether 27 year old Ba is the man for the job remains to be seen. He has responded to the rumours by saying on Twitter:
“Holla back everybody. So much stuff about me lately. Rumours are rumours! Just forget about it.”
