Despite a slight upturn in recent form rumours persist that Andy Carroll may leave Anfield in the summer. Even if he does stay Liverpool fans would ideally like to welcome another target man to bolster the forward line and give the team more options.
Luis Suarez is a great second striker but he needs someone ahead of him to benefit from the superb supply line that the Uruguayan offers. A top striker will score a dozen goals a season from Luis’ rebounds alone.
Fernando Llorente could be the perfect answer. He again showed his class last night with a last gasp winner for Atletic Bilbao which carried them to the Europa League final. Liverpool have a decent history of signing Spanish forwards and the other Fernando, Torres, would surely give him a positive account of Liverpool if asked.
Apart from the fact that Llorente’s goals put Manchester United out of the Europa League Liverpool fans will like his work rate as well as his superb touch. He may not be the fastest player in world football but he makes up for it with his football brain and deadly finishing. At 27, he’s going to want a big contract but if Liverpool really pull out the stops he shouldn’t be beyond their reach.
Manchester City are supposedly sniffing around but they can’t buy everyone – there simply aren’t enough squad numbers. So hopefully the top brass at Anfield will add this sublime Spaniard to their wish list for the summer.
