Should Liverpool go for Robben?

Whilst Franck Ribery worked as hard as anyone for a heroic Bayern side last night it was the other flank that provided the biggest threat and the real class. Arjen Robben was head and shoulders above the rest at The Bernabeu , causing no end of problems for the accomplished and pacey Marcelo down Real’s left side. Robben was the architect of the Spanish side’s ultimate downfall, pinning the Spaniards back with brilliant wing play so that they couldn’t mount any concerted pressure.

It may seem foolish to suggest that a player on top of his game and about to play in the Champions League final with Bayern would want to up sticks and move back to England. But Robben is a journeyman and an enigma. He has never failed at any of his previous clubs but he has also never stayed for more than 3 years with any one employer during his professional career. He has been at Bayern for that period now and, whatever the result in the final next month, the Dutchman may well see the game as the natural conclusion to his time in Germany.

With his pace, composure, trickery and delivery he would be the perfect additon to a Liverpool squad that is desperately in need of quality in wide areas. He can play on either flank or behind the front man and , at 28, has so much still to give.

The Liverpool manager must surely already be drawing up a longlist of players that would pique the interest if available and, after his display last night, Arjen Robben must be included, however distant the possibility of getting him. There would be absolutely no harm in a cheeky bid for the balding magician from Bedum.
