There is seldom smoke without fire in the transfer market and this one has been smouldering for too long of us not to pay attention.

L’Equipe has followed up reports in England this week by suggesting that Tottenham are now in advanced negotiations for ex-Arsenal and Chelsea man Lassana Diarra.

Currently 11th in the Premier League, Tottenham is in advanced discussions with Lassana Diarra on a free contract. The former French international , 29, versatile defensive player , was asked by the manager Mauricio Pochettino , following the injury to right back Kyle Walker but also to densify its workforce in the middle.

Tottenham, have definitely lacked a top anchor man for the midfield of late. Many have come in but none have really stamped their mark on the team and cemented a place in a Tottenham side for any length of time.

Is Diarra that man? Well, he may be. But the part of L’Equipe which talks about Spurs needing cover at right back could be the most compelling reason for a transfer. At 29 Diarra can do a job in midfield but is also a solid right back. This versatilely would make him a useful addition to Tottenham right now.

Diarra rose through the ranks of The Premier League before getting a plum role at Real Madrid, where he played 87 league games between 2009-12. Since then his career has stalled a little. He went to Anzhi for a year before they decided to put their entire squad up for sale. He’s now a free agent after a year at Lokomotiv Moscow.

But the move has been poopooed by more recent reports which state that:

Tottenham could make a move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez but are not likely to sign Lassana Diarra, despite reports linking him with a move to north London.

Let’s see the lad in action. Tottenham fans: keen?
