When Louis van Gaal took the Manchester United job the question on the lips of most was about who he would sign to replenish the waning stock of the club.

But with him at The World Cup for much of the summer it wasn’t clear to see who was making the ultimate decisions relating to the early summer signings.

In his first press conference he said of the early arrivals:

‘Shaw and Herrera were already on the list. I gave my approval because I like them.

This could be deciphered to mean that they wouldn’t have necessarily been his first choices but that the club had already decided to buy them.

The signing of Marcos Rojo further muddied the waters in terms of the boss’s feelings towards Luke Shaw in particular. He also made his feelings known about the fitness, or lack of, of the England man on his return from Brazil.

But Shaw now looks fit and his debut is surely not far away. Jonny Evans has also reassured onlookers that this is a very special talent indeed. He said this week:

‘I had the chance to work with Luke in pre-season and there is no doubt he is going to be the best left-back in the world,’

Big words indeed. But we couldn’t agree more. LvG has probably seen how good Shaw is in training. But if he hasn’t yet fully appreciated the talent he has at his disposal he soon will.

Once Shaw gets a run in the team – probably beginning this weekend – we can see him having a blinder. This guy is an absolute monster for his age. He’s strong, lightning quick and has the balance of a top level winger. His distribution is also superb.

It looks as if the 4-3-3 may be used again this weekend. But the 3-5-2 might suit Shaw even better. Whatever formation is chosen, we feel certain that Shaw will be a crucial part of it before long.
