Manchester United about to make shock signing of the summer?

Surely not

This one is so crazy that it might just be true. Manchester United have tried and failed to bring in a top centre back of real authority this summer.

While the impending signing of Daley Blind from Ajax will add defensive depth he’s not seen as that type of rugged competitor which many believe that Manchester United need for the back line.

And if Manchester United can’t bring in a top target they may look for shorter term options in order to bolster a squad which looks thin at the back.

Reports today suggest that Manchester United may make a shock bid for an old Chelsea legend. The Metro reports:

Manchester United have reportedly held talks with former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho about a shock move to Old Trafford.

Carvalho, now 36, is currently playing for French club Monaco but his agent has been exploring the possibility of a move away before the transfer deadline.

The player is believed to be ready for a career in coaching as his illustrious playing time comes to an end and perhaps, in a Laurent Blancesque move, he may be prepared for a short-term swansong in The Premier League where he can provide much needed cover for Manchester United in defence.

At 36 he’s played for Real Madrid, Chelsea, Porto and Monaco as well as representing his country on 75 occasions, scoring 4 goals.

Manchester United fans: can you imagine Carvalho making the move to the club?
