Manchester United legend says £30m man will be ‘worth the wait’

Zaha never settled at Manchester United

Superstar

We have thought this all along. There is something in the movement, the form of a truly special player, that makes you sit up and take notice. The exact qualities aren’t immediately discernible. There is just something about the relationship that they have with the ball that fills you with excitement.

Luke Shaw sits very firmly in that category for us already. And it’s great to hear a Manchester United legend, and top defender, talking in glowing terms about the lad this weekend, because there is obviously still doubt in some quarters as to the fee paid for the England man.

Gary Neville said:

“This lad has got incredible potential. I worked with him during England’s World Cup campaign and Manchester United fans should be excited. He can be anything he wants to be.

“He’s incredible to watch sometimes. He’s aggressive, good in the air, strong, quick, a good kicker of the ball, a good passer, a good crosser, he can beat people, he can dribble – he’s got it all but people must acknowledge he’s still a boy.

“He is learning about what it takes to be a United player, where the standards of preparation and levels of expectation are relentless.

“But he will be worth the wait.”

In our view, Luke Shaw is one of the Manchester United untouchables already – one of the first names on the team sheet. Not because of what he has achieved already but what he will achieve. More than anything Shaw needs game time now. He’s already worth his place in the side but we ain’t seen nothing yet. Because this guy is possibly better going forward than he is defending – and he’s an excellent defender.

So let him make his mistakes in the first team, like David de Gea did a few years back. Long term it didn’t do Manchester United any harm – quite the opposite in fact. De Gea is now top 5 in the world and Shaw can follow the same path.

Manchester United fans: Happy with Shaw?
