Pricey

Manchester United’s biggest apparent problem over much of the last ten years has been how to replace the midfield that set impossibly high standards in the 90s and beyond.

Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Beckham weren’t just great players but, together offered a wonderful balance.

But in recent times much of the concern has seemingly shifted to a defence which has lost the the similarly titanic talents of Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic.

There has been a huge amount of speculation about who Manchester United will bring in as the rebuild continues. And latest reports in Spain suggest that United are one of the clubs that is keen on old boy Gerard Pique:

€30MILLION VALUE

Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City interested in Barça defender Gerard Pique

he (Pique) is the one being chased by Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

The report suggests that Chelsea would be willing to part with 30m Euros for the player to replace 33 year old John Terry. The same source says Manchester United are waiting with an offer of 25m.

We would argue that this is on the pricey side for an accomplished player but one who may struggle with the pace of The Premier League. He always looked a little slow when he was at Manchester United. But he did have great feet.

We also wonder whether there is now light at the end of the tunnel for Manchester United’s current defence. Shaw and Rafa are starting to show their class and dynamism down the flanks – there are few better than them in the league – and the centre backs are also improving. The defensive unit is also one of the paciest in Europe.

Marcos Rojo looks better every week and Chris Smalling gave a superb performance against Chelsea. With Jones, Evans and McNair in reserve, perhaps Manchester United should wait until a worldie, like Hummels, becomes available before spending megabucks on another defender.

Let’s see some Pique clips. United fans: does the club really need him?
